I got an email yesterday from Tent Blogger (Jon Saddington). Trust me, I’m not cool enough to know him, I’m just on an email list. I also got it right in the middle of thinking about the upcoming year. I took a big leap at the end of 2011, changed what I’m doing entirely, and am looking toward the future. I’m thinking through goals for the next year, what I need to learn, and what I can do to excel in my field. Here’s a part of the email I received at that point:
We’re all in a period of transition whether we know it our not. Some of you might be fairly comfortable with where you are and what you’re doing but you’ve become too comfortable for your own good. Time to shake things up a bit.
For others, you already know that you need to “get out” and this might be the right time to do just that. Leaving, though, will be a challenge and will definitely be difficult but you simply can’t imagine getting to the end of 2012 and find yourself doing the same thing, again. What a tragedy. Life is too short for that sort of nonsense!
In the midst of transition, this is huge stuff that I’m thinking through right now. It also just caused me to think about times I was in status quo mode as well. There’s always something to be doing, something that needs to be adapted towards. There’s new things that need to constantly be learned. Take some time to get uncomfortable. You don’t have to leave your job or prepare for a new one, but take some risks. We’re not getting any younger, and now’s a great time to act. What are you doing to make your mark on the world?
