Get Some Movement Going

Sometimes you just don’t feel like doing anything.  Sometimes you need some motivation.  I have two thoughts.   Here’s the first:

And then, maybe there’s a better idea.  Start small.  Set small manageable goals.  This helps you to build momentum.  Momentum is an awesome force.  (This is why Dave Ramsey often gets criticized for his financial advice.  His advice isn’t always the textbook math answer, but it helps to build momentum, which winds up yielding results far greater than the non-behavioral math.)  The problem is that when we have none, we don’t know how to get it going.  We just sit and wait, hoping for something spontaneous to happen – best idea ever to come out of the blue, something to happen for us, or a guy to come along with a paddle.

Instead, set some goals.  Do it right now.  What do you want to do, and what are little things you can do to get there?

-Want to start a blog?  Read a little bit by TentBlogger.  Don’t even worry about getting a domain yet.  Just look into it, it’s a step.  Then maybe register on blogspot.com or wordpress.com.  They’re free, and it’s a step.

-Want to read the Bible or jumpstart your spiritual life?  Just read one chapter.  That’s it.  Just a couple of minutes, but it’s a start.

-Need to make some phone calls?  Make an easy one first.  It gets you in the groove.  Then you’re not stationary and the next ones are easier.

Create movement.  The first part is always the toughest.  It’s much easier to keep momentum going than to get it started – so pick an easy place to start and move from there.
